GROUP B STREP PCR

LAB5196
GBSPCR

Collect

E-swab of gynecological site (vaginal, cervical, rectal, urethral).

Unacceptable Conditions

Nongenital sites; delayed transport; samples not collected on E-swabs; sample not properly identified; incorrect container; insufficient sample volume.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Internal:  Deliver to lab immediately.
Offsite:  Refrigerate and transport to the lab within one day.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Ambient temperature or refrigerated - transport immediately to the laboratory.

Remarks

Screening and identification of Group B beta hemolytic Strep only.

Indicate if patient is Penicillin-allergic and if susceptibilities to clindamycin and erythromycin should be performed.

In 2002, the CDC released revised guidelines for the prevention of perinatal Group B streptococcal disease. These guidelines recommend universal prenatal screening for vaginal and rectal Group B streptococcal (GBS) colonization of all pregnant women at 35-37 weeks gestation. Procedures for collecting and processing clinical specimens for GBS culture and performing susceptibility testing to clindamycin and erythromycin are also included in the guidelines.
